In-service Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment
The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 puts a duty of care on employers and employees (including the self-employed) to ensure the safety of all persons using the work premises.
Further legislation includes information on the need for electrical maintenance as part of meeting the duty of care:
The Management of Health & Safety at Work Regulations 1999.
The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989.
The Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992.
The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998.
Even so, around 1000 accidents involving electric shocks or burns are reported to the Health and Safety Executive each year and faulty or poorly maintained equipment is one of the main causes.
In the year ending 31 March 2008, Avon Fire and Rescue dealt with 33 fires in non-domestic premises, where an electrical appliance was identified as the most likely source.(Information supplied by Avon Fire and Rescue Service)
